All women have a uterus in which there are two ovaries. These two ovaries release an egg alternatively every month. This is called menstruation. This menstrual cycle is not something which any women would want to mess with. This menstrual cycle can be maintained and kept regular by having healthy habits. The menstrual cycle takes 28 days on an average.

PCOD

The ovaries produce androgens or male hormone in minute quantities. Sometimes due to hormonal imbalance due to any external or internal factors, the androgen is produced in larger quantities that are more than what the female could handle. Due to the release of larger amounts of androgen release, the ovaries release immature or partially mature eggs. These immature eggs turn into cysts in ovaries. This is called Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD)

PCOS

When the ovaries produce a higher level of androgen or male hormone than usual, this interferes with the development and release of eggs. Some of these eggs develop into cysts which are little sacs filled with liquid. The eggs are supposed to be released at the end of a menstrual cycle. But these eggs which have become cysts build up in the ovaries and sometimes get enlarged. PCOS is a hormonal disorder with the following symptoms

  • Irregular periods
  • Excess facial hair
  • Scalp hair loss
  • Acne
  • Depression
  • Difficulty in the conception of a baby

What can we do?

You might be advised to acquire weight loss through a low-calorie diet which is combined with moderate exercise. Even 5 per cent weight loss can show improvements in health. Losing weight might also increase the effectiveness of medication that are prescribed
