Before we start addressing that question, we need to understand a few things. We’ll understand a few terms that we hear around COVID-19 and do not have clarity on.
Asymptomatic or Symptomatic?
Asymptomatic: The person infected with Coronavirus does not have and never will have any symptoms of the disease. They become carriers and also have the possibility to get any other person very sick.
Symptomatic: The person infected with Coronavirus who shows the symptoms of the disease.
We need to understand a few more terms as follows:
Pre-symptomatic: A person who is infected with the virus but has not yet developed the symptoms of COVID-19. They look and feel normal.
Paucisymptomatic: A person infected with the virus and shows very mild symptoms that they ignore the symptoms completely.
Question of the Day: Which of the four spreads can be ignored?
Ans: None. The containment of this virus around the globe has been very challenging because any of the four carriers can make a potential spread of the virus.
How to make out between a Pre-symptomatic and Asymptomatic person?
How to make out between Asymptomatic and a person who is not affected by the virus?
What can we do about this?
Back to the basics. Avoid touching your eyes, ears, and nose. Wear a face shield and wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds before touching your face or another person or a pet.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that “40% of Coronavirus transmission happens before people feel sick”. A study from Iceland reveals “50% of people who were tested positive had no symptoms at the time of testing”.
Imagine a person who shows symptoms. Is hospitalization or home quarantine a better solution?
A person with mild-symptoms of COVID-19 can be kept in a home quarantine. About 80% of the affected people recover without needing special treatments.
Things to keep in mind about home quarantine.
- Stay in a separate room away from other family members or pets for at least 14 to 20 days or 5 days after the fever subsides or 3 days after all the symptoms subside. (Using a separate bathroom would be even better)
- Do not share any items that you use such as utensils, beds, upholstery, towels, etc.,
- Clean the top-touch places such as doorknobs, kitchen counters, step railings, bathroom fittings, etc., to avoid any contamination.
- Once they are out of the quarantine, the room must be cleaned and sanitized completely
If the patient is showing severe symptoms such as breathing difficulty or severe cough or has any underlying disease take them to a hospital right away without any further delay.
